Bhubaneswar: India on Tuesday lost a music icon but the image of Shivkumar Sharma playing a santoor will forever remain etched in our memories.
Besides leaving an impressive body of work in Indian classical music, the veteran santoor player also delivered some blockbuster Bollywood songs with classical flautist and another legend, Hariprasad Chaurasia as Shiv-Hari for over a decade.
The collaboration began with the album, Call of the Valley in 1967, along with guitarist Brij Bhushan Kabra before the duo teamed up for Yash Chopra’s directorial Silsila (1981), their first film, in which they made Amitabh Bachchan sing two tracks — ‘Neela Aasman So Gaya’ and ‘Rang Barse’. They had no idea that Silsila’s music would catch on the way it did.
Yash Chopra continued to repose faith in them and that saw them composing music for his films, Faasle (1985), Vijay (1988), Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991), Parampara (1993) and Darr (1993).
They were also signed for Sahibaan (1993) starring Rishi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit.
The duo even bagged four Filmfare Awards in the ‘Best Music Director’ category for ‘Silsila’, ‘Chandni’, ‘Lamhe’ and ‘Darr’.
“Hariji and me were doing films as long as it didn’t interfere with our classical music. Later it became difficult as both of us were touring,” he told DNA.
