Mumbai: The Aamir Khan starrer ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ (2002), which was a remake of the American comedy-drama ‘Forrest Gump’, failed miserably with a box-office collection of just Rs 60 crore.

An ‘emotionally hurt’ Aamir took a sabbatical thereafter and later in an interview with actor Rhea Chakraborty on her Chapter 2 podcast admitted that his ‘performance’ let the film down.

However, the original ‘Forrest Gump’ actor Tom Hanks is all praises for Aamir Khan and his movie.

During an interview with Zoom, Hanks called Aamir’s ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ extraordinary and said, “I think it’s a testament to how film grows on film. I think all of us have seen movies that have been incorporated into the rest of our creative process, sometimes bleakly, but sometimes very specifically.”

Talking about how the two movies, made in different countries, had their own differences and similarities, Hanks said, “Look at the differences and yet look at the similarities despite the filmmakers and the cultures that they were in. In many ways, those films were saying the same thing but with the added prospect of the new perspective that came along with it. I just, I think it should be celebrated. It was a glorious thing to behold.”

Earlier, sharing how the film’s failure had affected Aamir, ex-wife Kiran had said, “He was the one who took a step back. He wanted to re-examine his work and his life. For someone who was giving successes at the box office, and been relentlessly working for so long, I think it was the time that made him introspect. We all stuck it out together.”

Besides Aamir, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ starred Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh and Naga Chaitanya in prominent roles.

Directed by Advait Chandan, the film was released on August 11, 2022.

Made on a budget of Rs.180 crore, the film incurred a loss of nearly 100 crore.
