Berhampur: An assistant manager of a branded jewellery showroom in Odisha’s Berhampur city allegedly mortgaged jewellery worth Rs 33.38 lakh and floundered and lost the money in online gaming.
According to sources, the accused, identified as Simanchal Patro, took gold chains and bracelets from the showroom on the pretext to sell those to customers through personal visits to their houses. He instead obtained a loan of Rs 19.7 lakh from a bank against the jewellery and spent the same on online games, according to the complaint lodged by the showroom at Sana Bazaar in the city.
He was unable to give a satisfactory reply on the missing jewellery and later confessed to having mortgaged those for a loan to play online games, it added.
The complaint has been lodged at Bada Bazaar police station.
