Bhubaneswar: The Twin City police said on Saturday that Asadur Jaman, a national of Bangladesh, was accused Raju Mandal’s handler in the case involving seizure of seven SIM boxes from a house in Bhubaneswar.
Police Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda said that Mandal hails from West Bengal and was operating the SIM boxes from a rented accommodation in Bhubaneswar. His work was to ensure that UPS, internet, and other services are functional.
Around 1000 SIM cards mostly pre-activated from West Bengal, old SIMs, routers and other equipment were seized following a raid on a house on Friday.
The SIM box was used to bypass international calls to Pakistan, China and the Middle East. Mandal used to visit the house in the event of a SIM problem and carried out maintenance and repairs.
Due to the masking of original numbers, SIM boxes are mostly used for cybercrimes, hate speech, terrorist activities, extortion, and other crimes. Therefore, it causes issues for law enforcement organizations, said Panda.
“Jaman had visited India in October via Agartala and also Bhubaneswar. He returned to Bangladesh in December. He made payments to Mandal during the visit and has reportedly set up two more SIM boxes. Those two will be busted soon,” the Police Commissioner added.
