Kochi: In a tragic incident, at least four students were killed and more than 60 injured at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) during a music concert on Saturday evening.
The concert, part of the Tech Fest, featured playback singer Nikhita Gandhi and was being held at the university’s open-air auditorium.
A huge crowd had gathered, and a stampede-like situation emerged as those at the back tried to rush forward and get closer to the stage.
It started raining and many students fell from the steps.
“As part of the Tech fest, a musical programme was also organised. Unfortunately, the crowd was huge and there was rain. The steps created some problems and some students fell down. The number of people injured I can only tell tomorrow. More than 2,000 people attended… 2 students are critical,” Vice-Chancellor Dr Sankaran told ANI.
Kerala’s Health minister Veena George confirmed the death of four students.
“Four persons were brought dead to Kalamassery Medical College,” George told the media.
Several injured students were shifted to the hospital for treatment.
The Health minister has assured all necessary arrangements for the victims and help for those injured.
