Bhubaneswar: In a brutal and shocking incident, a man shot a stray dog and injured another at Jagamara in Odisha capital on Wednesday for allegedly killing some of his chickens.
According to sources, residents of Tala Sahi spotted a dog injured by a shotgun in the afternoon and informed Sewa Hi Sankalp Anusthan, an animal welfare organisation. As the team led by its founder Rajesh Prusty began treating the injured animal, the locals found another canine on the premises of a house nearby. It was found dead with pellet injuries on its chest. The other dog was shot in the spinal cord.
“We rushed the injured dog to our shelter in Forest Park. Its condition is critical and the animal is paralysed. The dog which was killed and the injured one are seven to eight years old,” Prusty told TNIE.
The accused, Kitab Patnaik, however, claimed that he had used a catapult to hit the two dogs as they had killed his 10 to 15 chickens
Prusty said that they suspect that he shot at the dogs using an air gun. A complaint has been lodged in this connection at Khandagiri police station.
The accused has absconded after coming to know about the police complaint. Till the filing of this report, he was on the run and efforts were on by police to trace and nab him.
The capital city has been witness to such cruelty against animals in the past. Only last year, a pregnant dog was brutally killed by a woman and her neighbour in April while a man killed five puppies in June.
