Dhanbad: A student allegedly committed suicide after she was beaten up by her teacher for wearing a ‘bindi’ to school.
The tragedy took place in Dhanbad’s Tetulmari area on Monday.
The parents of the deceased, who was identified as 16-year-old Usha Kumari, staged a protest against the school management and urged police to take action.
“The unfortunate incident occurred on Monday. We have registered an FIR against the principal and the accused teacher of St Xavier’s School,” India Today quoted Tetulmari police station SHO Ashish Kumar Yadav as saying.
Taking cognisance of the incident on Wednesday, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairperson Priyank Kanoongo said: “We received information that a student has died by suicide. A suicide note has been recovered in which she alleged of being tortured by a teacher in her school. FIR has been registered and the accused arrested. Further probe underway.”
Uttam Mukherjee, chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee of Dhanbad, said that it was a serious issue. He discussed it with the District Education Officer as the school was not affiliated to the CBSE.
“I have spoken with District Education Officer. I met the victim’s family today,” said Mukherjee.
