Sambalpur: The campus menace of ragging seems to have surfaced in Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla once again as a student was seriously injured in the latest incident on Thursday.

According to sources, a third year student was allegedly beaten up mercilessly as he opposed to ragging by a senior student inside a hostel. The junior student sustained grievous injuries on his face, back and hand.

After the injured student lodged a complaint with the anti-ragging cell of the university, the Dean, Students’ Welfare Prof Sudhanshu Sekhar Das held discussion with both students.

On being informed, the parents of the third year student have arrived at the university to look after him, the sources said.

Speaking to Odisha Bytes, the Dean said it was not a ragging incident as two students of third year had a fight over some issues. “I have received a complaint in this regard from the injured student and started investigation into the incident,” he added.

It may be noted that two second year students of the institute had accused their seniors of ragging them on March 28 and the vice-chancellor of VSSUT had ordered an inquiry.

In August 2019, a video showing around 50 students being ragged by seniors in the university had gone viral. Following inquiry, the authorities imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 each on 52 students and debarred 10 students from appearing at the examination for one year.
