Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday inaugurated the Subarnarekha Irrigation Project’s canal system that will irrigate 15,359 hectares (ha) of farmland.
First water was released today. The canal will irrigate agricultural lands in 94 villages under Baripada, Betanoti, Morada, Suliapada and Rasgovindpur blocks of Mayurbhanj district, stated a release.
Speaking on the occasion, Naveen said Subarnarekha irrigation project shall irrigate 1.09 lakh ha of land in Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts.
The Chief Minister said Mayurbhanj is the first district among very few districts in the country where piped water supply has been provided to every family. A sum of Rs 768 crore is being spent on piped water supply project in the Mayurbhanj district.
Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Minister Pratap Jena said 70,000 ha of land in Mayurbhanj district will have irrigation facilities by January 2024.
