Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik has lauded Subroto Bagchi and Susmita Bagchi for making the single largest private donation of Rs 425 crore to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, along with MindTree co-founder NS Parthasarathy and his wife, Radha Parthasarathy.

This combined donation will help the premier institution for advanced research to build an 800-bed multi-speciality hospital along with a post-graduate medical school on its sprawling campus.

Taking to Twitter, Naveen wrote: “Appreciate Mrs Susmita Bagchi, Shri Subroto Bagchi, Mrs Radha Parthasarathy and Shri NS Parthasarathy for joining hands with IISc Bangalore to set up a PG Medical School along with a multi-speciality hospital. May the magnanimous gesture inspire many others towards philanthropy.”

Subroto Bagchi is Chairman of Odisha Skill Development Authority with rank and status of a Cabinet Minister while Susmita Bagchi is heading the ‘Mo School’ initiative for the state government as its Chairperson.

The CM also tweeted about the couple’s generous contribution of Rs 340 crore towards the establishment of a world-class cancer hospital and palliative care centre in Bhubaneswar. “Their generosity and voluntary contribution through @MoSchoolOdisha & @skilled_odisha will continue to inspire others,” he added.

Sri Shankara Cancer Foundation, a not-for-profit trust from Bengaluru, will set up the Bagchi-Sri Shankara Cancer Hospital and Research Centre at Info Valley here. The state government will provide 20 acre of land and the Bagchi couple have committed Rs 210 crore for the project.

The cancer hospital is expected to become operational by January 2024, with 250 beds.

Similarly, Karunashraya, the Bengaluru-based palliative care organisation, will set up Bagchi-Karunashraya Palliative Care Centre over 20 acre at the cost of Rs 130 crore near the cancer hospital.
