Sultry Weather In Odisha: Bhubaneswar Records 32.8°C By 8.30AM, Mercury May Soar To 45°C At 9 Places Today

Bhubaneswar: With heatwave gripping Odisha, Bhubaneswar on Tuesday recorded 32.8 degree Celsius and 79% humidity by 8.30 am, the Regional Meteorological Centre informed.

Yellow warning has been issued for some places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Angul, Deogarh, Boudh and Balangir for the day. Heatwave is likely to prevail at a few places in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Balangir and Boudh on May 17. “The state is witnessing a rise in temperature under the influence of dry westerly/northwesterly winds and high solar insolation. The maximum temperature is likely to be more than 40°C and remain 3 to 5°C above normal at a few places in the state.” the Met office said.

People have been advised to take precautionary measure while going outside during day time between 11 am and 3 pm.

Tuesday also saw several places in the state recording high humidity with Puri topping the chart at 87%, followed by Gopalpur at 84%, Chandbali at 83%, Keonjhar at 80% and Bhubaneswar and Paradip at 79%.

According to a forecast, the mercury may touch 45 degree Celsius at Jharsuguda, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Titlagrah, Balangir, Sonepur, Sundargarh, Boudh and Angul with the twin cities of  Bhubaneswar and Cuttack at 40 degree Celsius each during the next 24 hours. Six places – Jharsuguda, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Titlagrah, Balangir, Boudh and Sonepur – are likely to register 45 degree Celsius on May 17. There will be slight drop in temperature thereafter, it added.

On Sunday, 15 places had recorded maximum temperature of 42 degree Celsius or more with Balangir being the hottest place at 44.5 degree Celsius.

According to weather experts, heatwave engulfed Odisha as Cyclone Mocha while curving away from the eastern seaboard enhanced the flow of warm and dry westerly winds towards the state.
