New Delhi: ‘Hamare Barrah’ has now hit a stumbling block in Supreme Court.
The apex court on Thursday suspended the screening of the controversial film, observing that they found the teaser of the movie to be offensive.
“We have seen the movie trailer in the morning, and all the offensive dialogues continue in the trailer,” the Supreme Court said while pronouncing its order.
A vacation bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta was hearing a petition challenging the Bombay High Court’s order granting release of the film last week.
Taking note of allegations that the film, featuring Annu Kapoor among others, is derogatory to the Islamic faith, especially married Muslim women, the bench stated that the teaser was full of “objectionable materials.”
Justices Nath and Mehta asked Bombay High Court to take an expeditious decision on the petition filed by Azhar Basha Tamboli.
The high court allowed the Kamal Chandra-directed film to be released in theatres after the makers agreed to delete two dialogues.
Advocate Fauzia Shakil, representing the petitioner, said that the high court lifted the stay on the film’s release through an “unreasoned order.”
“The high court could not have directed the CBFC to constitute a committee because the CBFC was a party interested in the litigation,” the advocate was quoted as saying by PTI.
Even as ‘Hamare Baarah’ — which explores the theme of overpopulation – was given the green light a week ago by the high court, Karnataka and West Bengal banned its release pending the case to be resolved.
