Bhubaneswar: The survey for laying new roads on both sides of Daya West canal near Bhubaneswar has revealed around 3,540 encroached structures on government land.
Following its plan to lay the three-lane roads on both sides of the canal for 38 km from Barang to Jatni, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) assigned the survey work to National Institute of Social Work and Social Science (NISWAS).
The NISWAS formed 7 teams of students to carry out the survey. During the survey that continued for 20 days since May 20, the teams went door to door to collect data in a special format.
According to BDA sources, the survey submitted to the BDA revealed that there were total 3,540 encrocahced structures in the area. Those include 2,736 residential houses and 739 commercial buildings including shops and temporary cabins. Besides, 65 other structures including temples, schools, community hall, cowsheds and walls have been constructed on encroached land, the survey revealed.
The sources said the BDA plans to demolish the encroached structures and rehabilitate the displaced people.
