Chennai: Production at a Tata Electronics facility in Tamil Nadu, which manufactures components for Apple iPhones, will be suspended indefinitely following a fire over the weekend, officials announced on Monday. The team is currently working to mitigate any further damage caused by the blaze.
“We have stationed fire engines at the plant as there are chances of a follow-up fire incident or smoke coming off when the sheds that had fallen during the accident are removed,” Reuters quoted M. Velu, a district fire officer, in a report.
“We have not yet ascertained the cause of the fire,” Velu added.
The fire erupted at the plant in Tamil Nadu early on Saturday, resulting in minor injuries to 10 workers and bringing production to a halt. Apple has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident, while Tata has indicated that the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The company emphasized that emergency protocols at the plant ensured the safety of its employees.
The plant produces essential back panels and various other components for iPhones. Additionally, another building within the same complex is set to begin iPhone assembly before the end of the year, although the extent of its impact from the incident remains unclear.
