Bhubaneswar: Even as IMD forecast that temperature may rise to 40 degree Celsius or more in Odisha from May 28 to June 1, mercury crossed 44 degree in 6 places of the state on Tuesday.

According to the evening bulletin of the regional centre of the India Meteorological Department in Bhubaneswar, maximum (day) temperature zoomed past 40 degree Celsius in 17 places of the state on the day.

Almost entire western Odisha turned a frying pan as Boudh recorded the highest temperature in the state with 45.9 degree Celsius. It was followed by Sonepur with 45.3 degree and Titlagarh 45 degree.

While Jharsuguda sizzled under 44.8 degree Celsius, Sambalpur recorded 44.6, Balangir 44.5 and Bhawanipatna 44 degree.

The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack registered 39.4 and 38 degree Celsius respectively.

The IMD, in a special bulletin, said maximum temperature is likely to be 40 degree Celsius or more at many places in interior Odisha from May 28 to June 1.

It is likely to be above normal by 2 to 4°C in some districts of interior Odisha and above normal by 2 to 3°C in a few districts of coastal Odisha during the period.

“Due to absence of any major synoptic features and presence of high humidity in lower level, hot and humid conditions are very likely in coastal Odisha during next 3-4 days. However, a north-south trough is likely towards June 1 and may trigger thunderstorm activity in some districts of coastal Odisha,” the IMD said.
