Angul: Tension mounted in a village of Odisha’s Angul district as irate villagers staged road blockade in protest against Forest department after a man was trampled to death by an elephant on Wednesday.
As per reports, the 56-year-old man, identified as Bhabagrahi Jena of Basala village under Bantala forest range in the district had gone to a crop field near his house alone in the morning. An elephant came to the spot and trample him to death.
Agitated over the elephant menace, the villagers staged a road blockade near Basala demanding adequate compensation to the family of the victim. As traffic movement on the Bantala-Mahidharpur road was paralysed and tension prevailed in the area, Forest officials accompanied by police went to the spot.
The Forest officials and police tried to convince the agitating villagers to withdraw their protest. After a long discussion and assurance by the Forest officials that necessary compensation would be paid to the victim’s family, the agitated villagers withdrew their protest.
