Nabarangpur: A wildlife smuggler was arrested by the police and a tiger skin seized from him near Papadahandi in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district on Saturday.
The arrested person has been identified as Kamal Kumar Mohanty (30), a resident of Satnamisahi under Papadahandi police station limits in the district, a police official said.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Papadahandi police conducted a raid at a place near Papadahandi deer park. The police officials seized a Royal Bengal Tiger skin and arrested the wildlife criminal from the spot, he said.
In this connection, Papadahandi Police registered a case under relevant sections of IPC and Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. The recovered skin will be sent to Wild Life Institute of India, Dehradun for biological examination, police said.
Investigation is underway to find out other persons associated with the illegal trade of the wildlife animal, police said.
