While implementation of the new Motor Vehicle Act 2019 has led to resentment in India, here’s a look at fines slapped for traffic rule violations in other Asian countries.

In South Korea, a bicycle rider can be slapped Rs 1,700 penalty for such violations. India has no such provisions.

In India, the fine for drunk driving is Rs 10,000. The same in Japan is Rs 6,77,000. Similarly, driving a vehicle without a licence in Singapore can attract a fine of Rs 5,17,000 as against Rs 5,000 in India.

Driving without insurance in USA is a violation of Rs 1,07,000.

The fines are higher even in Sri Lanka, where penalties amount to Rs 12,000.

Further, India doesn’t have provisions for certain types of violations, including honking.

It is reported that the use of the horn in Japan is permitted in exceptional cases only, and that too to save someone’s life on the road. If used unnecessarily, the penalty is up to 20,000 JPY (about 30,000 INR).
