Bhubaneswar: Days after sub-inspector Sushant Kumar Swain was caught taking bribe, Commissionerate Police in Odisha capital has directed all SIs and ASIs, who were transferred long ago but are yet to leave the police stations, to join duty at their new places of posting in three days.

Swain was one of cops who had overstayed at the police station despite his transfer. He continued to be at Khandagiri police station though he had been transferred elsewhere.

The police personnel who have defied the transfer orders have been asked to join duty at the place of their latest postings in three days.

DCP Pratik Singh issued this directive and warned of legal action against the IICs of the police stations concerned if SIs and ASIs fail to join the duty at the police stations they have been transferred.

As per a notification issued by the Commissionerate Police, a total of 24 sub-inspectors have defied the transfer orders. Among them are six lady sub-inspectors. Besides, three ASIs have not joined the duty at new police stations.

It was stated in the directive that if these sub-inspectors and ASIs do not move out to their places of new postings, their higher-ups have to give  clarifications for that. If clarifications are not satisfactory, legal action will be taken against the IICs, it was stated.

On February 16, a major reshuffle had been effected in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack urban police districts (UPD). A total of 88 police officials including an inspector were transferred elsewhere. Of them, 62 new SIs were shifted to the Commissionerate Police.

On June 17, 2021, the Commissionerate Police had launched an Organised Crime and Property Offences Cell in the state capital. A property offence prevention and detection (POPD) team was formed at the police station level in the city.

However, it was found that police officials in charge of POPD were misusing powers. The issue came up for discussion at the monthly review meeting on crimes on Friday.

Besides, SIs and ASIs who have stayed at police stations for along time are allegedly inflicting torture on people in their area.
