Balangir: Hundreds of tribals gheraoed a police station in Odisha’s Balangir district on Tuesday in protest against police inaction on attack on them
According to sources, the people of Bangomunda village in the district participated in Chhatar Yatra in good number two days back. Villagers from neighbouring villages including tribals turned up in good number to participate in the festival.
During the celebration, some people attacked a group of tribals on previous enmity. The assailants beat up the tribals with sticks and stones. At least 5 tribals were injured in the attack and admitted to local hospital.
Following this, the members of Adivasi Samaj had lodged a complaint seeking action against the accused at Bangomunda police station.
As the police did not initiate any steps against the accused for two days, the tribals along with other villagers including women went in a procession and gheraoed the police station on Tuesday. The police tried to pacify the agitated tribals by assuring them of taking suitable action on their complaint.
But the tribals continued to stage a dharna before the police station demanding action by the police station. Later, they withdrew the agitation on intervention of senior police officers, the sources said.
