Triple talaq, the 1400-year-old custom, is actually banned in a number of Muslim nations. India, on Tuesday, banned it after Rajya Sabha passed the Muslim Women’s (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the decision and tweeted that an archaic and medieval practice has finally been confined to the dustbin of history. In a separate tweet, he said he salutes “the remarkable courage of those Muslim women who have suffered great wrongs just due to the practice of Triple Talaq” and the abolition of Triple Talaq will “contribute to women empowerment and give women the dignity they deserve in our society.”
Here is a list of Muslim countries where the archaic practice is banned:
Saudi Arabia
Pakistan
Bangladesh
Malaysia
Algeria
Egypt
Jordan
Iraq
Brunei
United Arab Emirates
Indonesia
Kuwait
Morocco
Egypt was the first country to ban Triple Talaq way back in 1929. Pakistan banned it in 1961.
