New Delhi: A category 1 storm hit the Shanghai region Monday, causing significant damage.
Typhoon Bebinca is the most powerful storm to hit Shanghai in 75 years (since 1949), according to Chinese state media, with wind gusts reaching 151 km per hour (94 miles/hr).
More than 400,000 people in Shanghai Metropolitan area were relocated by Sunday night, before the powerful typhoon made landfall in the coastal area of Lingang New City in east Shanghai, China Meteorological Administration said.
Typhoon Bebinca forced cancellation of hundreds of flights as Shanghai’s two main airports grounded all flights. Train services were cancelled and highways closed, while a 40 kmph speed limit was imposed on city roads.
Hundreds of trees were uprooted, houses, cars and other structures damaged in the city, its outskirts and coastal areas, as seen in videos posted online.
Shanghai’s 25 million residents were advised to stay home as the storm battered the city.
Resorts in Shanghai like Shanghai Disney Resort, Jinjiang Amusement Park and Shanghai Wild Animal Park were temporarily closed and many ferries halted.
Bebinca dominated Chinese social media, being one of the most-discussed topics on Weibo on Monday.
Typhoon Bebinca also passed through Japan and the central and southern Philippines, where the damage was less than in China.
