Bhubaneswar: The Utkal Chamber of Commerce and Industry Ltd (UCCI) has sought the intervention of chief minister Naveen Patnaik to resolve acute coal shortage faced by industries and captive power plants in the state.

In a letter to the chief minister, UCCI president Brahma Mishra has stated that the captive power plants (CPPs) have been facing shortage of coal supply since August. Those have coal stock of two-three days against the prescribed level of 15 days.

Mishra pointed out that since more than 65% of coal mined in the state is supplied by the Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) to other states, the industries in Odisha are facing coal crisis.

As a result, the industries getting the feed from the CPPS have been pushed to the brink of closure. The micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are particularly worst affected by the crisis.

Drawing the attention of the chief minister to the fact that the present crisis may lead to job loss of over 10 lakh workers and revenue loss of Rs 15,000 crore, Mishra sought his immediate intervention in the matter.
