UDISE+ Survey: Less Than 3% Govt Schools Have Internet Facility In Odisha; Know Gender Parity, Teacher-Pupil Ratio & Other Details

Bhubaneswar: Even as the Odisha government has been stressing on online education and computer literacy, it has been lagging far behind in providing the infrastructure for the students in its schools.

According to the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) for 2020-21 released by the department of school education and literacy under Ministry of Education, only 19.74% of the total schools in Odisha have computer facility.

While 7.26% of schools have internet connection, only 2.84% of government schools have the facility compared to 99.6% in Punjab, 89.79% in Delhi, 87.21% in Kerala and 72.36% in Gujarat.

Following are other findings of the UDISE+ in Odisha:

  • Of total 64,185 schools, 50,256 are government schools, 30,377 primary, 21,839 upper primary, 9,519 secondary and 2,450 higher secondary. Compared to Odisha Madhya Pradesh has 1,33,271 schools, Maharashtra 1,10,114, Rajasthan 1,07,376 and Uttar Pradesh 2,65,991 schools.
  • Number of schools having AWC or pre-primary sections in all types of schools: 53,557. These include 46,670 government schools.
  • Number of teachers in all types of schools: 3,55,974. Govt schools: 2,33,273. In MP, of 6,08,411 total schools, 3,05,485 are government, in Maharashtra: 7,66,196, Govt: 2,49,657 and in UP: 14,87,687 Govt: 6,23,194.
  • Pupil, teacher ratio: Primary schools: 16, upper primary: 15, secondary: 18 and higher secondary: 62
  • Enrolment of children with special needs: 45,018 in primary and 37,371 in upper primary
  • Gross enrolment ratio: Primary: 97.4, upper primary: 93.2, Elementary: 95.2, Secondary: 81.5, Higher secondary 46.4
  • Gender parity index: Less than 1 in first 3 levels and above 1 in higher secondary. GPI value 1 or more shows that the GPI is favorable to the girls, while GPI of less than 1 shows relative under representation of girls in that specific level of school education
  • Promotion level: Primary: 100%, Upper Primary: 100%, Secondary: 84%
  • Dropout level: Zero in primary and upper primary, 16% in secondary
  • Availability of electricity: 52,173 accounting of 81.29% schools. Functional electricity available in 45,493 schools accounting for 78.43%
  • Availability of drinking water: 96.46%
  • Boys’ toilet: 97.92%, functional: 90.39%
  • Girls’ toilet: 97.64%, functional: 89.67
