New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved imposition of President’s Rule in Puducherry.
On Tuesday, President Ram Nath Kovind accepted the resignation of Chief Minister V Narayanasamy and his council of ministers.
The cabinet’s decision will be sent to the President for a final nod, which is expected to be a formality.
“The CM has resigned and nobody has claimed to form the government and therefore the LG has recommended suspending the 14th Assembly. Now, our approval will be sent to the President. After his approval, the Assembly will stand dissolved,” said Union Minister Prakash Javadekar.
The Narayanasamy government lost the floor test on February 22 after losing majority in the 33-member House following resignation of one DMK and five Congress legislators.
Assembly elections are due in Puducherry in April-May, along with West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
‘Murder Of Democracy’ Protest By Congress
The Congress blamed the Centre for the fall of the Puducherry government and will stage a ‘Murder of democracy’ protest during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the union territory on Thursday.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of a number of projects in Puducherry as well as Kerala.
