Bhubaneswar: Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala led phase XI of the Sagar Parikrama Yatra from the fishing harbour at Arjipalli in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Sunday.
The minister interacted with beneficiaries of Kisan Credit Card (KCC) and Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). Many beneficiaries shared requested him for new boats and nets to boost their livelihood from fishing. The KCC and certificates were distributed and assets awarded to progressive fishermen under PMMSY scheme.
Joint Secretary, Fisheries department, Neetu Kumari Prasad and Director, Fisheries Siddiqui Alam and others were present.
During Rupala’s visit to Nairi fishing village, representatives of mechanised, motorised and traditional boat owner association, dry fish processor, women SHG members spoke to him about their livelihood and food security.
The Union Minister also interacted with fish vendors at Chilaka Lake Fish Market, Balugaon and heard the conditions of around 1.5 lakh fishermen connected to the lake.
Rupala informed that the Department of Fisheries has already undertaken a strategic initiative on Matsya Sampada Jagrukta Abhiyan to enhance awareness among the fishermen and other stakeholders. During the Sagar Parikrama Phase-XI programme, “Matsya Sampada Jagrukta Abhiyan” was undertaken simultaneously.
After this, Sagar Parikrama Yatra Phase-XI reached Balugaon Fish Landing Centre where the minister interacted with fishermen, fisherwomen, fish farmer and PFCS members. He said special focus has been given in PMMSY for women which can lead to gender inclusive environment, socio-economic development of women and overall growth in fisheries sector.
Around 9,200 fishermen, fisheries stakeholders and scholars attended the Sagar Parikrama Phase XI from different places.
