New Delhi: A massive rescue operation was launched by the Air Force in Uttarakhand’s Lamkhaga Pass situated at an altitude of 17,000 feet. Here 17 trekkers, including tourists, porters, and guides, lost their way on October 18 following heavy snowfall and inclement weather.

The Air Force has so far recovered 11 bodies from the area leading to the Lamkhaga Pass — one of the most treacherous passes that connect the Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh with Harsil in Uttarakhand.

The SOS call from the authorities was responded to by the Indian Air Force on October 20 and the IAF soon deployed two Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) choppers to reach tourist hill station Harsil.

The search and rescue operation started on October 20 with three National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel onboard the ALH craft at its maximum permissible height of 19,500 feet.
