New York: Many had doubted whether COVID-19 vaccines, which were developed in record time since the outbreak of the global coronavirus outbreak, would work. But just over a year after several countries rolled out mass inoculation programme, it’s clear that the vaccine has been effective – if not in preventing the deadly disease at least in lessening the severity and significantly lowering deaths and hospitalization.
Children are also now being gradually inoculated against COVID-19.
To drive home the point about efficacy of vaccines – against COVID-19 and other diseases — World Health Organization has launched a campaign #VaccinesWork, especially for children.
“Children will continue to grow– even during a pandemic. Through access to vaccines against diseases, their immunity should too. #VaccinesWork!” was one among several tweets put out by WHO.
“As we respond to #COVID19, now more than ever, we must ensure routine immunization continues to stop vaccine-preventable diseases and avert the risk of multiple disease outbreaks,” WHO said.
The UN body stressed that it’s of utmost importance for children to continue to receive all recommended childhood vaccines for other infectious diseases too.
Sharing a list of 21 vaccine-preventable diseases, WHO tweeted: “Talk to your health worker to ensure vaccination is up to date for you and your family.”
