Mumbai: Rahul Gandhi is in trouble for his comments on Veer Savarkar.
The freedom fighter’s grandson Ranjit Savarkar and Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale have filed an FIR against the Congress leader for ‘insulting’ Savarkar.
Ranjit Savarkar sought Rahul’s arrest, saying that this wasn’t the first time he and Congress party had insulted Savarkar.
“In the past too, they have insulted Savarkar, so we have filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi at the Shivaji Park police station. A woman had made comments against Sharad Pawar and she was kept in jail for a month. Savarkar is a bigger leader than Pawar and hence strict action should be taken against Congress leaders,” said Ranjit.
In 2017 too, Ranjit had filed a complaint against Congress leaders. The Bhoiwada magistrate’s court had ordered an inquiry, but there was no further action.
“Rahul Gandhi is a serial offender and in 2017, too, he made objectionable comments on Twitter. Congress is trying to play vote bank politics using the same agenda of insulting Veer Savarkar,” Ranjit added.
On Tuesday, the Congress MP said that Vinayak Damodar Savarkar received a pension from the British and worked against Congress.
“In Andaman jail, Savarkar wrote a letter and told the British to forgive him and release him from jail. Veer Savarkar took a pension from the British. He worked against Congress. After coming out of jail, he accepted the British proposal and joined their forces,” Rahul said at a tribal convention during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
Defending his comments, Rahul said that he was very clear Savarkar helped the British.
“I have a document that comprises Savarkar’s letter to (the) British in which he has stated ‘I beg to remain, sir, your most obedient servant’. This is not written by me… but Savarkarji. Let everyone read this document,” Gandhi said, showing a copy of the letter.
Ranjit hit out as Congress, saying that since Bharat Jodo yatra is not getting publicity, Rahul is making such comments to get publicity.
