Very Heavy Rain Likely Over These Districts In Next 24 Hours; Squall Warning Off Odisha Coast

Bhubaneswar: With a low-pressure area forming over West Bengal and adjoining Noth Odisha, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to lash one or two places in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts in the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday.

“A cyclonic circulation developed over Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood on Monday morning and under its influence a low-pressure area has formed over West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha with the associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8km above mean sea level,” the IMD said in the midday bulletin.

The intense spells of rain can lead to a rise in the water level of Burhabalang and Subarnarekha, the Met office said, adding that there will be waterlogging in low-lying areas and temporary traffic congestion in urban areas.

Besides Balasore and Mayurbhanj, most places in North coastal Odisha, several places in north interior and south coastal Odisha and a few places in the rest of the state will experience light to moderate rain or thundershower during this period.

A yellow warning ( heavy rainfall) has been issued for one or two places in Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Deogarh and Jajpur.

Thunderstorm with lightning is likely to occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh and Keonjhar.

Heavy rainfall is also likely at one or two places in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Balasore on Tuesday. Thunderstorm with lightning may occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Dhenkanal.

Squally weather with surface wind speed reaching 40 to 50 gusting to 60 kmph likely over North Bay of Bengal, off Odisha coast, till October 19. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea areas of North Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast during this period.

The state will continue to witness rainfall activity till 8.30 am on Friday (October 22), the IMD added.
