Bhubaneswar: Recording an alarming rise in cyber-crime, Odisha reported at least 2,394 cases of such frauds in the last six months.
As many as 2,394 cyber fraud cases have been reported in several police stations between January and June, this year, with the fraud amount rising to over Rs 36 crore, Police Commissioner of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Sanjeeb Panda said on Thursday.
Cases of cyber fraud were reported not only from Bhubaneswar but from other places also, he said.
He said that police have managed to freeze around Rs 9.5 crore and returned Rs 46 lakh to the victims while the other duped people are waiting for their money to be recovered
Most of the cyber fraud cases have taken place through UPI fraud, social media, parcel delivery, credit card delivery, and sending messages about SIM KYC, he said.
The Commissionerate Police have managed to arrest 21 cyber fraudsters and produced them before court. Five of them are members of inter-state racket, Panda said.
Two types of cyber fraud cases have been reported — digital arrest and investment fraud. Most of the cases are reported for digital arrests.
