Mumbai: There were scattered showers in Mumbai on Thursday, but no one cared.
Thousands, perhaps millions, hit the streets to greet the triumphant Team India contingent — which landed in Delhi in the morning before flying to Mumbai in the evening.
As Vistara flight ‘UK1845’ – specially named to honour retiring T20 superstars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli – touched down at Mumbai, the ground staff greeted them with a water salute.
It took more than half an hour for the team to complete formalities and come out of the airport premises.
They were soon aboard buses, headed for Marine Drive and Wankhede Stadium, where cricket fans had lined up since the afternoon.
A specially designed open-top bus, with pictures of winning moments and celebrations painted all over, will take the players and support staff from the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) to Wankhede Stadium, across Marine Drive and Nariman Point.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which announced a prize money of Rs 125 crore for the team, will felicitate the champions at Wankhede Stadium, which was choc a bloc hours before the players arrived.
Entry for the event was free, and strictly on a first-come first-served basis.
There were scattered showers in the city, but no one cared.
