Kolkata: For the Anglo-Indian community of Kolkata’s Bow Barracks, Christmas is all about homemade cakes, wines and the old world charm.

The three-storeyed buildings arranged in a rectangle with their little balconies were originally built for the British troops during World War II. The troops were allotted these apartments according to their ranks, but they refused to stay there and the flats were opened up to the Anglo-Indian community.

Though the Anglo-Indians are dwindling in numbers as many of them left the barracks for greener pastures, Christmas brings them back to the roots. The entire locality is decked up with chains of lights and the air filled with the aroma of homebaked plum cakes and wine.
