New Delhi: Vijay Mallya’s lawyer has requested the Supreme Court to be discharged from the case as he has not been receiving any communication from the fugitive businessman for a long time.
“I want to be discharged from this matter. I am not receiving any instruction from this man,” advocate EC Agarwala told a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli, LiveLaw.in reported.
The two-member bench was considering two special leave petitions filed by Mallya in connection to a monetary disputes case with State Bank of India.
The apex court asked the lawyer to submit Mallya’s email ID and residential addresses to the court registry within a week and permitted him to initiate procedure to withdraw his legal representation for the former Kingfisher boss.
The Supreme Court was hearing a plea filed by Mallya, seeking a stay on the confiscation of all properties owned by him and his relatives, when his counsel made the petition.
On July 11, the court awarded a four-month sentence to Mallya, who was found guilty of contempt of court in 2017 for withholding information from the court. Mallya was also asked by the top court to deposit $40 million with 8% interest within four weeks, or else his properties would be attached.
Mallya, the primary accused in the Rs 9,000-crore bank loan default case involving now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines, is facing extradition proceedings in the UK at the instance of the Indian government.
