Cuttack: Police arrested a wanted criminal after he was injured in an encounter in Odisha’s Cuttack on Thursday night.
Speaking to media on the arrest, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Pinak Mishra said the Commissionerate Police received reliable information that the criminal, Deepak Nayak alias Shankar of Ranihat Gopalsahi, was transporting illegal firearms in the city.
Following the information, a special squad of the Commissionerate Police intercepted him at Bhuasuni Gada at around 8.30 pm. On facing the police, Shankar opened fire to escape, he said.
The DCP said the police team resorted to controlled firing for self defence. After Shankar sustained bullet injuries in his left leg in the encounter, he was unable to move and was arrested from the spot. A gun and ammunitions were seized from his possession, he added.
Later, Shankar was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in the city.
According to police sources, Shankar was allegedly involved in the murder of businessman Mohammed Farooq in Malgodown area of the city in November 2014. Besides, he was wanted in illegal arms trade, they added.
