Bhubaneswar: In a major breakthrough, the West Bengal Police in association with the Commissionerate Police arrested a most-wanted Maoist leader from a private hospital in the Odisha capital on Thursday afternoon.

According to sources, the West Bengal police, acting on a tipoff about the presence of the Maoist leader in Bhubaneswar, had informed the Commissionerate Police.

Later, in a joint raid, police arrested him from a private hospital.

The arrested Maoist leader, identified as Alik Chakraborty, was undergoing treatment at the private hospital for some time after managing to give the slip to the West Bengal police.

Though the West Bengal police claimed that  Chakraborty was a most-wanted Maoist, they did not divulge further details about his criminal antecedents.

The Special Task Force (STF) of the CID of the West Bengal Police was desperately looking for Chakraborty, a politburo member of Red Star, a small Naxalite outfit of the outlawed CPI-Maoist, and the face of the movement in Bhangar against a power grid since violence broke out there five weeks ago.

Booked under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Chakraborty was evading police while spearheading the movement through his network.
