Kyiv: Ukraine has been putting up a brave and spirited fight against Russia since Vladimir Putin ordered a military operation against his neighbours two weeks ago. And Ukraine’s cause has been helped by the fact that as many as 20,000 foreigners have joined its armed forces to resist Russian invasion, reported The Kyiv Independent.
One of Ukraine’s top English newspapers also quoted a minister as saying that foreign citizens can apply for Ukrainian citizenship.
“Foreign volunteers will be able to obtain Ukrainian citizenship if they want to, First Deputy Interior Minister Yevhen Yenin said on March 9. Twenty thousand foreign volunteers have joined Ukrainian forces to fight Russia since March 6,” the Kyiv Post said on Twitter.
On February 27, the fourth day of Russia’s invasion, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the formation of an ‘international brigade’. Foreign nationals willing to fight for Ukraine were invited to join the forces by visiting Ukrainian embassies in their respective countries.
Zelensky has time and again urged United Nations, NATO, EU and other organizations to provide arms and ammunition for the fight against Russia.
Financial and military aid have poured in for Ukraine from around the world, while different countries and major companies have imposed sanctions against Russia.
