Bhubaneswar: The Jharkhand’s Deoghar ropeway incident claimed three lives, two of whom fell during the rescue operation that ended on Tuesday.
A woman, who was among the 40-odd people stranded in 12 cable cars that collided at Trikut hills on Sunday, fell after her rope broke. She was immediately rushed to the hospital but was declared brought dead. She belonged to Jhausagarhi. Her son-in-law and others were waiting for her on the ground when the unfortunate incident happened.
A man from Dumka in West Bengal has also fallen to his death from a rescue chopper, seconds away from safety. The man could be seen clutching the rope dangling from the chopper. Just as he was about to be pulled in, he slipped and fell to his death.
Deoghar DC Manjunath Bhaijantri said the injured have been admitted to Deoghar Sadar Hospital.
“Three people died in the mishap, including two tourists who fell from helicopters on Monday and Tuesday during rescue attempts, while 12 injured people are undergoing treatment at hospitals,” officials said.
Personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, the National Disaster Response Force, and the Indian Air Force coordinated the rescue efforts
Meanwhile, Jharkhand High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and ordered an inquiry into the matter. The court will hear the matter on April 26.
