Bijnor: A major accident was averted after 13 out of the 22 coaches of the Dhanbad-bound Kisan Express—that departed from Firozpur—were left behind on the track as the train got split into two halves due to technical failure in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district on Sunday.
According to locals, a coupling broke down near Chakrajmal in Bijnor around 4 am, triggering panic among the passengers onboard.
The engine and eight coaches proceeded to Seohara railway station, while 13 coaches, including the guard’s compartment, were left behind.
These coaches were carrying hundreds of passengers along with police recruitment candidates, sources said. No one was injured in the incident. The guard informed the train driver and the police after he realised the situation. Both railway officials and police personnel arrived at the scene.
The exam candidates were sent to Bareilly in four buses, reported the IANS. Superintendent of Police, Dharam Singh Marchal, confirmed that the incident occurred in the Seohara police station area. Efforts were being made to connect both parts of the train.
The split of the train caused a disruption of services on the route for several hours. Jananayak Express train was halted at Habibwala, and the Punjab Mail train was stopped at Dhampur for about two hours.
The incident triggered criticism of the Railway minister by social media users and opposition parties, yet again.
