Angul: A wild elephant, whose leg had got stuck between two tree trunks, was rescued safely after five hours of efforts by forest officials in Odisha’s Angul district on Tuesday.
Sources said a female elephant, aged around 15 years, had entered a mango orchard in search of food near Bruti village. The animal had pushed a leg between two trunks while trying to get mangoes. However, its leg got trapped between two trunks and the elephant was unable to move.
Residents in the area came to know about its plight and informed the forest department officials about the incident. Forest officials rushed to the site and swung into action to rescue the animal.
The animal was first traunquilised and a JCB was used to separate the two tree trunks in order to rescue the elephant, said a forest official.
The elephant was provided with proper treatment as it had sustained minor injuries. It will be released into the forest after necessary medical aid, the official added.
