Bhubaneswar: BJD’s Sulochana Das took oath as the Mayor of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday. She was administered the oath of office by Municipal Administration Director Sangramjit Nayak.
Along with the new Mayor, all the 67 newly-elected Corporators were also sworn in.
In her address to the residents of Bhubaneswar after taking oath, Sulochana said, “We believe in teamwork. The 11.5 lakh residents of the capital city are now like my family. Their welfare and taking the benefits of various welfare schemes of the government to their doorsteps are our responsibility now.”
Sulochana defeated her nearest rival and BJP candidate Suniti Mund by 61,143 votes in the recently held elections for the BMC Mayor post.
She is the first woman Mayor to head the BMC.
The journalist-turned-politician joined the BJD in June 2017 after quitting the Congress. Sulochana served as the BJD spokesperson before being appointed as the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities in September 2019.
In that role, Sulochana was instrumental in setting up the Integrated Infrastructure Complex for the rehabilitation of elderly persons, transgenders, drug addicts and destitute people in different districts.
She did her schooling at Binjharpur village school, Jajpur. She completed her graduation from Bhadrak College and post-graduation from Ravenshaw University. Later, she did her Masters in Economics and Journalism and Mass Communication, and also holds an LLB degree.
