New Delhi: A freight train traveled a distance of 84 km without a loco pilot before being brought to a stop in Punjab’s Mukerian district.

The incident occurred around 7 am on Sunday when the train, initially halted at Kathua station in Jammu and Kashmir, loaded with concrete, began moving due to the slope towards Pathankot.

According to reports, the engine was allegedly left running during the halt for crew change at Kathua station.”It seems that the train cabin was not secured when the previous crew left and the new crew was taking over. The goods train was carrying materials for Railways construction,” India Today quoted railways sources as saying.

The train travelled at a speed of 100 km/hr and was stopped near Ucchi Bassi in Punjab’s Mukerian after a lot of efforts by the railway officials with the assistance of drivers and staff from passenger trains, reports added.

A video of the incident is also doing the rounds on social media platforms.

Meanwhile, a probe has been ordered to determine the cause of the incident. “The probe will be conducted to identify any potential safety lapses to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” Divisional Traffic Manager, Jammu, was quoted as saying by the news agency ANI.
