Bhubaneswar: Commuters had a tough time due to a severe traffic jam on Khurda-Bhubaneswar highway in Odisha capital following breakdown of a heavy commercial vehicle on Monday.
Vehicular movement virtually came to a grinding halt near Patrapada area in the state capital after the heavy vehicle stopped because of some technical snag, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded for hours, sources said.
A long queue of vehicles was seen after the heavy commercial vehicle from Andhra Pradesh to Balasore with nearly 50 tonnes of goods got stuck on the middle of the road, they said.
As the incident happened during peak rush hours, office goers and people proceeding to their work places faced difficulty in reaching their respective destinations in time. Vehicles were stranded on the highway for long hours.
Traffic police personnel, who rushed to the site, swung into action to ease the traffic congestion and took quick steps to divert some vehicles on different routes. Efforts were also made to repair the heavy vehicle.
Finally, arrangements were made to remove the heavy vehicle from the road to restore normalcy. The situation eased after quite some time.
According to DCP Traffic, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack, the traffic situation on the National Highway was normalised after the breakdown heavy vehicle was removed from road.
