New Delhi: Mehul Choksi, the uncle of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, has filed a complaint against upcoming Netflix documentary titled ‘Bad Boy Billionaires’ and demanded a pre-screening.
The documentary is all about frauds committed by high-profile Indian business tycoons and their flamboyant lifestyles. The trailer features Choksi, Nirav Modi, Subrata Roy of the Sahara Group, Satyam’s Ramalinga Raju, and ‘King of Good Times’ Vijay Mallya.
Choksi, in his petition, has asked for postponement of the documentary’s release, stating that it can lead to a media trial. He mentioned that he came to know about the documentary after its trailer aired on Netflix on Tuesday. The author of the book titled ‘Flawed: The Rise and Fall of India’s Diamond Mogul Nirav Modi’ is also seen in the trailer .
Choksi has pointed out that a petitioner has the right to innocent, free and fair trial, and such a documentary would cause serious prejudice to his case.
The petition also claims that Choksi has been falsely accused of crimes in India.
During a brief hearing held at the Delhi High Court, Netflix’s lawyer, senior advocate Kishan Kaul said that the documentary has a two-minute piece on Nirav Modi where mention of Choksi has been made. He also pointed out that no regulation of content is allowed on OTT platforms.
‘Bad Boy Billionaires’ is scheduled to air on September 2.
