Baripada: A tusker strayed into Baripada town in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district late on Wednesday, triggering panic among residents.
According to sources, the elephant later entered MKC High School premises in the town by breaking the boundary wall and stayed put there.
On being informed, a team of Forest Department reached the place. As they attempted to shoo it away, it ran helter-skelter at the main market and several lanes of the town while charging towards people. Efforts are on to tranquilize the jumbo. Police have advised the locals through loudspeakers to stay indoors.
Sources further said that a herd of elephants from Similipal recently come out of the forest in search of food and one among them was left behind and later headed towards the town.
