Weak Monsoon Subdues Rains Over Odisha; Heavy Downpour Forecast For Next Month

Bhubaneswar: Weak monsoon conditions will continue to prevail in Odisha for 3 days during which there will be no significant rainfall activities, the regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Tuesday.

The state received 0.4 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours against the normal of 12.1 mm, a shortfall of 96%.

The weather agency, however, has issued yellow warning for thunderstorm for 3 days from August 31 with heavy rain warning on September 2. While one or two places in the state are likely to experience light to moderate rain for 2 days, thunderstorm with lightning warning has been sounded for one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Dhenkanal, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati on August 31. Light to moderate rain or thundershower may also occur at a few places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Balasore, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati and at one or two places in remaining parts of the state.

On September 1, thunderstorm with lightning is likely at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Balangir, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak and Jajpur districts. Light to moderate rain or thundershower may occur at many places in Interior Odisha and at a few places in the coastal districts.

The MeT office has issued yellow warning of heavy rain at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Keonjhar, Angul, Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, during the subsequent 24 hours (September 2). Thunderstorm with lightning is also likely at one or two places oin Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Boudh. Light to moderate rain or thundershower may occur at many places across the state.

There will be little change in the weather condition during the subsequent two days, it added.

Notably, Odisha has recorded 782.4 mm rainfall against its normal value of 896.3 mm till August 29 this monsoon season. While one district has received excess rain, 11 are deficient and the remaining 18 in the normal category.
