Kolkata: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Friday referred the recently passed anti-rape bill to President Droupadi Murmu for consideration.

The Aparajita Woman and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024 – that has proposed death penalty for rape convicts in case of victim’s death – was passed in the state Legislative Assembly three days ago and forwarded to the Governor for his consent.

However, Raj Bhavan the Governor expressed its displeasure over the Mamata Banerjee-led administration’s failure to provide text of the debates and its translation as required under the rules.

Once the Assembly secretariat sent the mandato0ry technical report to Raj Bhavan, Bose forwarded it to the President of India.

It remains to be seen how the President, who has been extremely vocal about unending crimes against women, responds to the Bill.

Similar documents sent for consideration by Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh are currently pending with President Murmu.
