What Is Water Lottery? Check Out From These Odisha Residents

Chhatrapur (Ganjam): Locals living at the Station Road in the district headquarters town have come out with an ingenious way of overcoming the daily fights for drinking water from a lone stand-post in their locality.

Here is what they do. They play out an instant lottery system every day to decide who gets water first. The water supply here is for only 30-45 minutes a day to meet the needs of hundreds of people.

The lottery system was a brainchild of the elderly living in the area. Though the idea has brought about a semblance and some peace, the water supply is scarce and infrequent.

“We resorted to a lottery system because of the regular disputes amongst us. This way we at least get a serial number and accordingly fetch water peacefully. However, only the first three winners get a chance to collect water while others in the queue have to return with an empty bucket as the supply stops,” said a woman resident.
