Bengaluru: Not for nothing do they say that dogs are humans’ best friend.
And if it happens to be a well-trained Dobermann, there’s no limit to what it can do.
As police in Karnataka’s Davanagere looked for a suspected killer, a police dog called Tunga 2 ran 8 kilometres in heavy rain to save a woman’s life as well as track down the murderer.
On Thursday night, a patrol team found a man’s body on Bada Road near a petrol pump in Santhebennur, Channagiri taluk.
The cops immediately alerted their superiors, and SP Uma Prashant deployed Tunga 2, her handler, constable Shafi and other police personnel to visit the scene of crime.
The Dobermann sniffed the victim’s jacket and made a dash. Tunga 2 and her handler ran non-stop for 8 kilometres before the dog stopped at a house where a huge commotion was heard.
Police personnel barged into the house and found a man mercilessly beating a woman, who was close to losing consciousness. The dog reached the spot in the nick of time to save the woman, identified as Roopa, who was quickly taken to a hospital for treatment.
Rangaswamy, who was torturing Roopa, was arrested.
Following interrogation and investigation, it turned out that Rangaswamy was the murderer police were looking for.
He killed 33-year-old Santosh with a machete on the highway near the petrol pump on suspicion that he had an illicit affair with his wife.
After murdering Santosh, Rangaswamy went to his village Channapura to kill his wife. The alacrity of police and Tunga 2 prevented a second murder.
“Yesterday (Thursday) in Santhebennur police station limits, we came to know at around 9.45 pm that a person had been found dead. We came to know his name was Santosh, aged 33 years, from Channapura village. The accused is Rangaswamy, who also hails from Channapura village,” police said.
Rangaswamy apart, two others have been apprehended.
