Hyderabad: The decision has been taken, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi asserted about party’s pick Anumula Revanth Reddy as the next Chief Minister of Telangana.
Congress likely to give official confirmation regarding Telangana CM by Tuesday evening.
The decision was taken during a meeting in Delhi attended by Rahul, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and national general secretary KC Venugopal, among others. A Congress Legislature Party meeting will be held in Hyderabad before the decision is announced, the NDTV reported.
Earlier, the 64 MLAs-elect had passed an online resolution authorising Kharge to choose the leader for Congress in Telangana.
According to media reports, Reddy might take CM’s oath on December 7. The swearing-in ceremony is likely to be held in Hyderabad’s LB Stadium. Senior Congress leaders Uttam Kumar Reddy and Bhatti Vikramarka might be given the Deputy Chief Minister post or some other portfolio, India Today reported.
ABOUT A REVANTH REDDY
The Telangana Congress chief is credited with leading the party to a thumping win in the November 30 Assembly polls. The party won 64 of 119 seats riding high on its ‘Maarpu kavali Congress raavali’ (Change needed, Congress must come to power) slogan. The Congress had urged the people of Telangana to give it one chance to prove itself as they had already given two terms to KCR.
>> Reddy was a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) while studying at Osmania University.
>> In 2007, he was elected as an MLC as an independent candidate.
>> Later, he joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and won the 2009 elections from Kodangal assembly constituency.
>> Along with 12 other MLAs, Reddy resigned from the TDP and joined the Congress in 2017.
>> He contested 2018 Telangana Assembly elections from Kodangal on Congress ticket but lost to the BRS (then TRS) candidate.
>> In June 2021, Reddy was appointed as the president of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), replacing N Uttam Kumar Reddy.
>> He was criticised within the Congress for changing the style of functioning as a state chief but was backed by the party’s high command, who projected him as a big leader in the state by pitting him against Chief Minister K Chandrsekhar Reddy (KCR) in the Telangana election from Kamareddy.
